SBDC Partnership Supports Growth of Family-Owned Business
With support from the Houston Small Business Development Center (SBDC), owner Brandi Harleaux has transformed South Post Oak Recycling Center (SPORC) into a modernized, thriving operation that recently achieved its highest revenue in nearly three decades.
Working with SBDC Business Advisor LeeVera Smith, Harleaux received guidance on marketing, succession planning, leadership development, and process improvements, helping position the family-owned business for long-term success.
Founded in 1994 by her parents, SPORC specializes in non-ferrous metal recycling. After joining the company as Chief Operating Officer in 2013, Harleaux partnered with the Houston SBDC to strengthen the business through strategic planning and targeted marketing. When she assumed ownership in 2017, the SBDC connected her with legal, financial, and business valuation resources to support a smooth transition. As the company expanded, Smith also introduced SPORC to the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center (TMAC) to improve safety and operational efficiency.
Today, SPORC has grown from a 13-person operation to a team of 30 and continues expanding its services and reach. Under Harleaux's leadership, the company has achieved record revenue while continuing to receive support from the Houston SBDC in marketing, workforce development, and business strategy.
In recognition of her leadership, Harleaux was named the SBA Texas Small Business Person of the Year in 2023.
